Brain Injury Awareness Month

Prevention, Hope, and the Power of Community

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, a time dedicated to education, prevention, and supporting individuals and families whose lives have been changed by brain injury.

Brain injuries affect millions of people each year. They can happen in an instant — from a fall at home, a car accident, a sports injury, or a workplace incident. What many people don’t realize is that a significant number of brain injuries are preventable.

Through awareness, education, and simple safety practices, we can reduce risk and protect the people we love.

But when a brain injury does happen, it is important to know something else:

Help is available. Healing is possible. And no one has to walk the journey alone.

Many Brain Injuries Are Preventable

While not every injury can be avoided, many can be prevented with simple precautions:

Wearing helmets during sports, biking, and recreational activities

Using seatbelts and proper car restraints

Preventing falls in the home and workplace

Practicing safe driving habits

Using protective equipment on job sites

Teaching children safe play and sports practices

Prevention is powerful. Every conversation about safety can help protect someone’s future.

When Brain Injury Happens, Families Need Support

Even with precautions, brain injuries still occur. When they do, families often find themselves navigating unfamiliar territory — medical decisions, long recovery journeys, emotional stress, and uncertainty about what comes next.

This is where organizations like The Jimmy Simpson Foundation step in.

For more than two decades, the Foundation has worked to support individuals living with brain injuries and their families through care, education, community, and advocacy.

One of the most unique resources offered through the Foundation is Safehaven, a residential program providing long-term care and support for individuals living with brain injury.

Safehaven: A Place Where Healing and Dignity Live

Safehaven was created with a simple but powerful purpose: to provide a place where individuals with brain injury can live with dignity, care, and connection.

"Safehaven exists because every person deserves a place where fear stops at the door.  We were built to restore dignity, one story and one survivor at a time."

Jessica Malone, COO, The Jimmy Simpson Foundation

At Safehaven, residents are surrounded by compassionate caregivers, meaningful activities, and a supportive community that understands the unique challenges of brain injury.

The impact reaches far beyond the residents themselves. Families, volunteers, students, and community members often describe their time at Safehaven as life-changing.

The Impact of Compassion:

Stories from Our Community

A Volunteer’s Perspective

“I did not realize how much getting to volunteer there impacted me. The time spent with residents opened my eyes and left a lasting impression on my heart.”

Ashley Kay

 Gordon Lee High School Student

A Former Staff Member

“When thinking of my time working at Safehaven, the word family comes to mind. Walking through the door brought a sense of peace, happiness, and love. The residents became family to me.”

Cindy Parker Day

A Community Partner

“Even though we only visit for a short time each month, every person who attends says how much it blesses them. The residents sing along to the hymns, sometimes with tears in their eyes. The warmth and love there is something you don’t forget.”

Melanie Poteet

 Grace Baptist Church

A Young Volunteer

“Safehaven is one of my favorite places to visit. The residents are really nice and very funny. Even though they face challenges, they always smile and are kind. They inspire me to want to go back and see my friends again.”

Share Your Story

Brain injury affects families, caregivers, medical professionals, and entire communities. Your story matters.

If you or someone you know has been impacted by brain injury — whether through recovery, caregiving, volunteering, or support — we would love to hear from you.

Your experiences can inspire others, raise awareness, and help more families find the support they need.

A Future Filled with Hope

The Jimmy Simpson Foundation continues to grow so that more individuals and families can receive the support they need.

"Every gift to Safehaven strengthens our commitment that no one faces their journey alone. When we grow, we don’t just serve more people – we change more lives."

Vickie Hodge, CEO, The Jimmy Simpson Foundation

Brain Injury Awareness Month reminds us that education saves lives, prevention protects families, and compassion changes futures.

Together, we can build safer communities, support survivors, and ensure that hope and healing remain within reach for every family.
