Brain Injury Awareness Month

, a time dedicated to education, prevention, and supporting individuals and families whose lives have been changed by brain injury.

Brain injuries affect millions of people each year. They can happen in an instant — from a fall at home, a car accident, a sports injury, or a workplace incident. What many people don’t realize is that

a significant number of brain injuries are preventable

          .

Through awareness, education, and simple safety practices, we can reduce risk and protect the people we love.

But when a brain injury does happen, it is important to know something else:

Help is available. Healing is possible. And no one has to walk the journey alone.

          Many Brain Injuries Are Preventable

Wearing helmets during sports, biking, and recreational activities

Using seatbelts and proper car restraints

Preventing falls in the home and workplace

While not every injury can be avoided, many can be prevented with simple precautions:

          Practicing safe driving habits

Using protective equipment on job sites

Teaching children safe play and sports practices

Prevention is powerful. Every conversation about safety can help protect someone’s future.

Even with precautions, brain injuries still occur. When they do, families often find themselves navigating unfamiliar territory — medical decisions, long recovery journeys, emotional stress, and uncertainty about what comes next.

Safehaven was created with a simple but powerful purpose: to provide a place where individuals with brain injury can live with dignity, care, and connection.

It Takes a Village

Why Volunteering with The Jimmy Simpson Foundation Matters

At The Jimmy Simpson Foundation (JSF), volunteers aren’t just helpers — they are the heartbeat of our mission.

Every smile shared, every song sung, every hour given helps create a community where individuals living with brain injury are surrounded by dignity, joy, and hope. Whether you’re coming on your own, with a group, or as part of an organization, your involvement truly makes a difference.

We are excited to share that

Becky Plemons has transitioned to Volunteer Coordinator

, and she is ready to help connect your time, talents, and passions with meaningful opportunities across JSF.

          Why Get Involved?

Your time, talent, or treasure can make a meaningful difference by:

           Empowering families facing brain injury

Bringing joy and dignity to long-term care residents at Safehaven

Raising awareness and expanding access to care in Northwest Georgia

Supporting a faith-based nonprofit organization with a proven track record of impact

No matter how you choose to serve, you become part of a mission rooted in compassion, community, and care.

We Love Volunteers — In All Forms

One of the most beautiful things about JSF is the variety of ways people show up for our residents and families. If you’re wondering, “Is there a place for us?” — the answer is yes.

           Groups?

            We love them.

           Churches?

Come sing — choirs, worship teams, and songwriters are always welcome.

           Musicians, magicians, and performers?

            YES, please.

           Kids learning to read?

Amazing — our residents love it.

Businesses that want to volunteer together?

            We have projects ready.

Individuals with a heart to serve?

            You belong here.

If you have an idea, a skill, or simply a willingness to help, we want to hear from you.

As the year winds down and twinkling lights begin to glow in windows across our community, we’re reminded of something beautiful: generosity doesn’t have to be grand to make a difference. At The Jimmy Simpson Foundation, we see every day how small acts of kindness become big, life-changing moments for the individuals we serve.

For brain injury survivors and their families, the holiday season isn’t just about tradition — it’s about hope, connection, and the comfort of knowing they aren’t walking their journey alone. And this time of year gives each of us a meaningful invitation to shine a little light for someone who truly needs it.

The Power of Simple, Steady Support

Brain injury recovery is not a straight line. It’s a winding path filled with victories, setbacks, and everything in between. What helps someone stay the course?

           Often, it’s the small things:

A caregiver who offers encouragement during a difficult therapy session.

A volunteer who spends an afternoon helping a resident paint a holiday ornament.

A donor who gives $10, $25, or $50 — believing that every life deserves dignity, safety, and joy.

These moments add up. They create a community where people feel seen, supported, and valued. And at Safehaven, Carol’s Light, and across all JSF programs, these small gifts of time, care, and generosity ripple outward in ways the giver may never fully see.

          What Small Acts Make Possible

When someone gives — whether it’s a donation, a shared post on social media, or a few minutes of their time — they’re not just helping today. They’re helping create stronger futures. Just a few examples:

A warm, decorated home for the holidays

Your generosity helps fill Safehaven with festive joy — wreaths on the doors, cozy blankets, cheerful crafts, and moments where residents can simply be happy.

In this season of giving, consider choosing one small way to bring light to someone rebuilding life after a brain injury:

When someone experiences a traumatic brain injury, the effects can reach far beyond physical impairments. Emotional challenges such as isolation, anxiety, and depression are prevalent, and social interaction plays a vital role in addressing these challenges. Research indicates that social engagement can promote not only emotional well-being but also cognitive recovery. By fostering connections with others, individuals living with brain injuries can regain a sense of normalcy and community. That’s where

Community offers individuals a sense of belonging, which is crucial in the healing journey. Studies show that people who are actively involved in community activities experience greater satisfaction in life, an essential factor in recovery and stress management. Brain injury survivors often feel an alienation from their previous social circles, leading to loneliness and despair. Carol's Light Support Group provides a safe haven where members can connect, engage, and share their stories, allowing them to reclaim their social identity while building supportive relationships.

Every month, Carol's Light hosts game nights offering a variety of classic games, card games, and board games. These casual gatherings provide opportunities for members to engage and strategize collaboratively, creating an atmosphere filled with laughter and friendly competition. Here are some ways game nights contribute positively:

: Playing games stimulates cognitive functions, enhancing memory, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. A fun evening with friendly competition keeps minds active and engaged.

Understanding Brain Injuries and Ventilator Dependency

Brain injuries can arise from various causes, including trauma, infections, lack of oxygen, or strokes. These injuries can manifest with diverse symptoms and impairments which complicate recovery and care. Recognizing the unique challenges goes beyond understanding the physical implications; patients may also face cognitive and emotional challenges. Similarly, ventilator-dependent patients require ongoing respiratory support, making discharge planning pivotal for their continued health.

Challenges of Discharging Patients with Brain Injuries and Ventilator Dependency

Discharge planners and healthcare providers encounter several significant challenges when caring for these patients:

           Complex Care Needs:

Both brain-injured and ventilator-dependent patients require specialized medical care that many facilities may not be equipped to provide.

           Safety and Compliance:

Finding a care environment that adheres to clinical guidelines while ensuring the patient's safety can be daunting.

           Family Involvement:

Family members need to be actively engaged in the discharge process, yet they often struggle with understanding the complexities of post-hospitalization care.

           Continuity of Care:

Any misstep in the transition can lead to lapses in care, affecting the patient’s recovery journey.

           Integrate Early Communication:

Consult with Safehaven’s team during the initial stages of discharge planning to gather essential insights and streamline transitions.

: Construct feedback mechanisms to learn from patients and families about their transition experience, creating an opportunity for ongoing improvement in processes.

          Common Causes of TBI

Both accidental and intentional factors can lead to TBIs. The most prevalent causes include:

           Falls:

This is the leading cause of TBIs, especially among older adults and young children, who may experience falls at home or in recreational settings.

           Motor Vehicle Accidents:

Collisions often result in significant head trauma, making road safety measures critical in reducing TBI statistics.

           Sports Injuries:

Athletes, particularly those involved in contact sports such as football, boxing, and hockey, are at heightened risk for concussions and other brain injuries.

Assaults, gunshot wounds, and other violent actions can lead to TBI, often leaving profound psychological and emotional scars.

           Explosive Blasts:

Military personnel are particularly susceptible to TBIs from blasts, which can cause unique injuries due to rapid changes in air pressure.

The Impact of TBI on Daily Life

Every traumatic brain injury is unique, and its impact on daily life can vary widely among individuals. Some common effects of TBI may include:

           Cognitive Impairments:

Individuals may experience issues with memory, attention, reasoning, and problem-solving. These challenges can hinder academic performance and occupational functioning.

           Emotional and Behavioral Changes:

Many survivors report symptoms of anxiety, depression, irritability, and difficulty managing emotions. These changes can strain relationships and contribute to social isolation.

           Physical Disabilities:

TBI can result in impairments such as speech difficulties, coordination challenges, and sensory processing issues, which can significantly alter one’s life.

           Social Implications:

Survivors may face stigma and misunderstanding from society, which complicates their reintegration into normal activities and support networks.

Evidence increasingly shows that patients with brain injuries or those who are ventilator-dependent experience better health results when transitioned to a supportive long-term care facility. Safehaven patients often enjoy improved health metrics and a reduced need for hospitalization thereafter.

Engaging Healthcare Professionals: Navigating Discharge Planning

Providers and discharge planners can significantly enhance care transitions by following intentional steps:

           Integrate Early Communication:

Consult with Safehaven’s team during the initial stages of discharge planning to gather essential insights and streamline transitions.

Create an ongoing dialogue with the care team at Safehaven to facilitate patient status updates and necessary adjustments in the care plan.

Equip family members with relevant information about upcoming changes, addressing any concerns and fostering trust in the care environment.

At the Jimmy Simpson Foundation, we are committed to providing exceptional long-term care for brain injury survivors through our Safehaven residential program and related outreach within the community. By understanding the daily challenges faced by individuals living with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their families we are able to provide support and increase awareness.

We know caring for today means learning for tomorrow.

Each year on May 7, we recognize National Brain Donation Awareness Day, a time to honor those who make the extraordinary decision to donate their brain to science. Their legacy fuels vital research and paves the way for medical breakthroughs that will benefit generations to come.

          What Is Brain Donation?

Brain donation allows scientists to study the effects of injury, disease, and aging on the brain. It’s not for transplant—it’s for research. These donations are essential to advancing our understanding of:

For families who have experienced the struggles of severe brain injury, this decision can offer purpose in the midst of grief. It turns loss into legacy.

Why Does Brain Donation Matter to the Brain Injury Community?

Without brain donation, many of the advances in brain injury rehabilitation, diagnostics, and care simply wouldn’t be possible.

Researchers rely on these gifts to:

At JSF, this aligns directly with our mission to deliver quality care, expand brain injury community outreach, and advocate for TBI research through our Foundations for the Future initiative.

Choosing to donate is a deeply personal decision. But for many families, it becomes a way to honor their loved one’s, and keep spirit alive—ensuring their story makes a difference. It’s a final act of love that opens the door to understanding, empathy, and hope.

At The Jimmy Simpson Foundation, we often say that healing begins with connection. But connection doesn’t just happen—it’s built by people who choose to show up. They show up with open hearts, listening ears, and helping hands. They show up to remind survivors, caregivers, and families navigating life after a traumatic brain injury that they are not alone.

, our long-term care residence for individuals living with traumatic brain injury, volunteers are part of the family. They don’t just drop in to help—they show up to connect. They play games with our residents. They volunteer at fundraisers. They provide much-needed supplies. They pack goodie bags, help organize seasonal activities, cook meals, make phone calls, offer hugs, and simply sit with someone who needs company.

How To Navigate The Holidays As a First-Time TBI Caregiver

If you’re a first-time TBI caregiver, remember: you are not alone. Explore tips for navigating holiday traditions and finding joy in the midst of new realities.

The holidays are one of those magical times when everything is merry and bright but sometimes everything that’s merry and bright reminds us of everything that’s different. In between the parties and the lights and the gift giving, sometimes the memory of what was compared to the reality of what is, is a lot to bear. If you are a first-time caregiver of someone with a traumatic brain injury, or struggling with accepting your loved one’s condition this holiday season, we’ve compiled a list of reminders and tips to keep you going. It’s important to remember that today and every day, you are not alone.

          Have Conversations With Loved Ones

People may already be aware of your situation but having conversations before the holiday can set you up to really be present for the festivities. Setting boundaries with loved ones on what does and does not work for you is an excellent way to ensure your needs are being met. It’s easy for people to forget how you’re feeling or what you need when they get into the rush of Christmas. Having a pointed conversation with the people you love will remind them that your family’s needs have changed and you deserve to have those needs met. Everyone who loves you wants to know how you’re feeling so don’t be scared of these types of conversations. They are an opportunity for people to love you better which is ultimately the best gift of all.

          Give Yourself Grace

The holiday season is hard! You are not the only one struggling to get things done or participate fully. Though your situation may be very different from those of your friends and family, everyone understands just how busy the holidays get so give yourself some grace. You are truly doing the best you can and you deserve to feel proud of your efforts. At the end of the day, it’s the time spent with loved ones that matters. It doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to be perfect. Give yourself some grace when things aren’t quite what they used to be.

          One Last Thought

Sometimes after a severe traumatic brain injury, old traditions can fade. If your family is experiencing a loss of a beloved tradition, consider this an invitation to try something new. You might surprise yourself with what you can create when you allow yourself to let go of what was and embrace the joy of something new.

From all of us at the Jimmy Simpson Foundation & Safehaven, we want to wish you a warm and Merry Christmas. TBI survivors and their loved ones are incredible people and we hope you allow yourself to celebrate and feel loved this holiday season.

The holiday season has most people rushing around but just because everyone else is checking things off his or her to-do list, doesn’t mean you have to. Everyone should be encouraged to slow down during the holidays but especially if life is different for you this year, it’s important not to push yourself too hard. Taking your time will not only relieve stress but it’s secretly the key to enjoying all the holidays have to offer. You don’t have to go all out for presents, or food, or make it to every Christmas party. You are allowed to take the Christmas season at your own pace. Whatever feels good to you is the right way.

Concussions & Sports: Tips For Protecting Your Kids

Concussions can happen when no one is looking. Discover how to identify subtle behavioral changes in your child and why early treatment is the key to recovery.

The crisp fall air is back and if you’re from the South, you know this means football season! While we love watching sports andour kids love playing them, it’s important to remember how common sports-related injuries are so we can help keep our kids safe. Some injuries are obvious like a cut, or a broken bone, but concussions can be different.

First, know what the Concussion Symptoms Are:

Then, notice how concussion symptoms appear:

Next, it’s important to teach your children these symptoms too. Often kids will get so excited to play their favorite sport that they may not feel like telling anyone when they start to feel badly. Maybe a child is worried about being taken out of the game, or maybe they feel they need to power through. Reminding your child of the importance of alerting an adult when they feel these symptoms will better equip them to seek help if they need it.

Finally, we encourage you to educate coaches and leaders on the symptoms of a concussion. Safety should be everyone’s priority and it takes community support and accountability to keep the game fun and lighthearted. Everyone benefits when we all look out for each other.

Oftentimes, especially in contact sports, concussions can happen when no one is paying attention. There’s so much going on during a game that it can be hard to see a concussion exactly when it occurs. This is why it’s important to not only understand the symptoms but also how the symptoms present. Early treatment is essential to recovery so while you might not be able to pinpoint the exact moment a concussion happened, you can observe changes in behavior and take action.

5 Ways You Can Support Your Friend in the TBI Community

Want to help a friend in the TBI community but don’t know how? From running errands to being a patient listener, discover 5 practical ways to show up and support.

It is not uncommon for families of people living with TBI to get caught up in the daily tasks of caring for their loved one. While loving a family member with TBI is always an honor, sometimes keeping up with daily routines and tasks is difficult. Add in doctor’s appointments, tests, physical therapy, etc and things can really start to pile up.

Offer help with the mundane tasks. Things you do on a regular basis can become difficult to keep up with when check ups and routine doctor’s appointments come into the picture. You can greatly help your friend by offering to come by and do the dishes or mow the lawn. These may seem like little things but trust us, this is a HUGE help to your friend.

Invite them out or offer to babysit so they can go have fun. Nobody likes to be forgotten, even if they get busy! If you are missing seeing your friend out and about, likely they are missing you too. Take them to dinner or offer to babysit their kids so they can go enjoy themselves. These small moments are beautiful encouragement and your friend is deserving of a break!

Cook a meal or run errands. Maybe going out isn’t in the cards and that’s okay. Cooking a meal at their home or grabbing the groceries so they don’t have to is an excellent way to take something off their plate.

Educate yourself on what they are going through. If you don’t know anything about Traumatic Brain Injury, that’s okay! There are plenty of resources to help you understand what your friend and their family is experiencing. It will also mean alot to your friend that you took the time to learn about their experience.

Be patient with them. Whether they are in the initial stages post-injury, or well along the journey, be patient with your friend. TBI is a stressful event and can have life altering effects. Reminding yourself to be patient will help you, and them, maintain a healthy, supportive connection.

The reality is, none of us are alone but we can sometimes feel that way when we get bogged down by the day to day. Show your friend they are part of a community, not just an individual by showing up and helping out. Your friend will appreciate it and you might find, it helps you a little bit too.

Summer is here! The kids are out of school and everyone is outside walking, playing, and being active. We love to see everyone enjoying the warmer weather but with increased activity comes the increase of potential accidents. Like it or not, some things can’t be avoided but the good news is, you can be prepared!

We all know that a head injury can have negative effects on the brain but do you know the signs of a Traumatic Brain Injury? It’s always good to see a medical professional when someone has sustained a head wound but if you haven’t witnessed a head injury and aren’t sure what to do, here are 5 Signs of a Traumatic Brain Injury to look out for.

This may seem obvious but we have a tendency to write headaches off because we all get them from time to time. If your loved one complains of persistent and painful headaches, it is wise to seek out medical advice.

Immediate and dramatic fatigue after a head injury is a common sign of TBI.

Volunteering at Safehaven isn’t just about giving back—it’s about finding joy. Hear from our volunteer Eli and learn how you can join our community today.

As we wrap up a beautiful month of warm weather and exciting events, we wanted to take a moment and share a testimony from one of the people that makes SafeHaven so special. Our volunteers not only contribute a meaningful presence to our residents, they find enjoyment and meaning for themselves too.

“The Jimmy Simpson Foundation Safehaven is one of my favorite places to visit. I like Safehaven because of the residents. They are really nice! They are always happy when they get to help and are very funny. My cub scout den has visited twice and both times was so fun. The first visit I was unsure and scared about going, but once I met Kim, Larry and Brad, I thought it was really cool. We made wooden planes and birdhouses. Kim was happy when she used the hammer and didn’t miss the nail one time. I had a lot of fun watching and helping Kim use the screwdriver, too. I was laughing because of how excited she was. The next visit, I made Kim an Elvis stamp picture to hang in her room. Brad arm wrestled us, showed us his favorite things on his Ipad, and made me laugh a lot. Larry told us about the planes. The Safehaven residents have opened my eyes to see people in a different way. Despite the challenges the residents face, they smile and are kind. They have inspired me to want to hang out with them more so they can have fun and I can, too. I’ve even thought about getting a job there one day. I always want to go back to see my friends as much as I can!”

Volunteering at SafeHaven isn’t just about giving back, it’s about understanding what makes life worth living and why people who are different from us deserve to enjoy life too. It’s a chance to connect with others and experience the joy of being a person. But don’t take our word for it, hear it from one of our favorite volunteers, eleven year old Eli Bowman:

What makes a life "good"? At The Jimmy Simpson Foundation, we believe it’s more than just care—it’s about joy, wonder, and experiencing the world to the fullest.

This year the Jimmy Simpson Foundation has been blessed with the opportunity to do many events! When we reflect on these beautiful opportunities and plan for upcoming events, we are reminded of why we started to do things like this in the first place. While these reasons live with us everyday, we wanted to take a moment to share our “Why” with you.

          The Jimmy Simpson Values

It’s no secret our values hinge on the idea that every person, regardless of physical or mental capabilities, deserves a good life. This is at the root of what we do and at the core of why Safehaven exists. But what is a good life? Is it just attending to basic needs? Waking up everyday, being cared for and then going to sleep to do it all over again? We like to think there is
something more.

          Living a Good Life

Living a good life can look different to different people, but at the Jimmy Simpson Foundation, we like to think it incorporates being surrounded by loved ones, enjoying extracurricular activities, and still getting to have fun and engaging experiences! Our beloved Jimmy Simpson, the inspiration for our work, lived a full and beautiful life. He enjoyed experiencing new things
and really living to the fullest. In his honor, we encourage our residents to do the same and that includes our Foundation-hosted events.
